SAAM 2022 Building Safe Online Spaces Together
Every April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) coordinates the national SAAM campaign. Below is an excerpt from their website regarding the SAAM 2022 campaign.
Last year, the national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign uplifted the message that “We Can Build Safe Online Spaces,” calling on audiences to practice digital consent, intervene when we see harmful content and behaviors, and promote online communities that value safety and respect. This April, the SAAM 2022 campaign continues to build on this vision with a call to action: “Building Safe Online Spaces Together.”
NSVRC is a great place to start with obtaining resources about consent including their easy to use Your Consent guide. This guide discusses topics like Understanding why you’re asking, Pay attention to body language, and more. It’s organizations like these that continue to give PSA strength to do what we do in helping to spread awareness.
Denim Day
Denim Day was established after a 1992 court case in which a rape conviction was overturned because the victim wore tight jeans. The court determined the jeans were so tight the victim would have had to assist in their removal, therefore making the sex consensual. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against false and harmful attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape.
